What a busy few months it has been for the Local Jobs First Commissioner and Office, as we worked to establish the office and inform people of the role and responsibilities of the Commissioner.
Since the Commissioner’s appointment, he has met with over one hundred and fifty stakeholders, attended and presented at over twenty forums and has shown his ongoing support of local industry.
Through the Commissioner’s interactions with industry, one thing has particularly stood out and that is, we all have the same goal in mind – to ensure local businesses, workers, apprentices and cadets continue to benefit from Victorian Government procurement opportunities.
A key component in supporting the Local Jobs First initiative has been through our advocacy and engagement functions, supporting the delivery of the Local Jobs First policy through multiple stakeholder groups. This includes agencies, contractors, employee and industry organisations including external providers.
While engagement and advocacy play an important role in the successful delivery of Local Jobs First, compliance is also a fundamental component of the Commissioner’s role.
To support organisations and agencies in meeting their contractual obligations, the Commissioner has provided transparency of the compliance functions, ensuring agencies understand their obligations, thereby reducing future issues associated with contractual non-compliance. With only a few months left of the working year, we are proud of what we have achieved so far and will continue to work diligently to create opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises to participate in state-wide government projects; and advocate on behalf of Victorian industry.
